Issue #19 | July 1, 2026
TL;DR
- OpenAI previewed GPT-5.6 Sol with government pre-approval access. Three-model family (Sol/Terra/Luna), new "ultra" subagent mode, strongest cyber safeguards yet, and developers locked out until the government says it's fine. The policy story matters more than the benchmark story.
- Last week you voted for open models. GLM 5.2 just beat Claude Opus 4.8 on Semgrep's IDOR vulnerability benchmark at 1/6 the cost. The harness matters more than the model. Open-weight is no longer the underdog.
- AWS Lambda MicroVMs is this week's Tool of the Week: Firecracker-powered sandboxes with VM isolation, near-instant resume, and state preservation. One API call gives you a fully bootstrapped compute environment for coding agents.
The Big One
GPT-5.6 Sol: The First Government-Gated Model Release
OpenAI previewed GPT-5.6 this week. Three models: Sol (flagship), Terra (2x cheaper than GPT-5.5, competitive performance), and Luna (lowest cost). Sol introduces "ultra" mode that spawns subagents to handle complex work. New state of the art on Terminal-Bench 2.1 for command-line workflows.
