The free lunch worked like this: every new model generation was cheaper than the last. You could keep your sloppy context strategy, wait three months, and let the next release paper over it. Context bloat was a temporary bug, not a permanent tax.
Fable 5 broke that. It costs 9x what GLM 5.2 costs per token, and it's Anthropic's least-deployed model despite being their most capable.
